One of the world’s largest private residences, a part of Umaid Bhawan Palace at
Jodhpur has now been turned into a luxury heritage hotel by the famed Taj Goup. The most preferred place for royal Rajasthani weddings, Umaid Bhawan Palace has as many as 347 rooms. Situated atop the Chittar Hill, the highest point in Jodhpur, it was originally known as Chittar Palace. The palace was renamed after Maharaja Umaid Singh who rebuilt it in its present form. Over 5000 artisans toiled for 15 years to make this remarkable palace. No mortar or cement has been used at Umaid Bhawan Palace. The ingenious stone carvers use carved stone blocks to join the stones, much in the manner of children playing with Lego sets of blocks.
